Doug is an interdisciplinary researcher and educator with training in landscape architecture and geography. His work focuses on shaping just and inclusive climate futures through place-based approaches to drawing, writing, and design. Doug earned a PhD in Geography from the University of British Columbia, where he was a Vanier Doctoral Scholar, and an MLA from the University of Toronto, where he received the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects Award of Merit. He previously worked as a designer at Spackman Mossop Michaels in Sydney, Australia. Before joining the University of Calgary, Doug served as the inaugural Ian McHarg Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design and as a Research Fellow at the Canadian Centre for Architecture. Doug is grateful to live and work on the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations).
